Raccoo-oo-oon – Behold Secret Kingdom

Sometimes you’ve just got to ignore a band’s terrible name and plow straight ahead into their music without thinking twice. Raccoo-oo-oon is a surefire example of this. Raccoo-oo-oon. Hahaha…ahem…ok, the music.

We’ve got quite an original concoction of sounds here that these fellows from Iowa have brewed up in their latest effort, Behold Secret Kingdom. Imagine Drum’s Not Dead era Liars with a few extra helpings of energy and passion added to the tribal jam fest. Then turn your thoughts toward the sonic collages and hall-of-mirrors soundscapes found in Animal Collective’s Here Comes the Indian. Got it? Alright. Now combine these two ideas, add some occasional jazzy noodling and some prehistoric Cyclops cave production, and you arrive at our album in question, a muddled and dizzying, yet extremely driven and focused bundle of tracks that sounds like a college graduate caveman with a good sense of humor rampaging through your living quarters.

Track highlights include the jazz inflected romp “Antler Mask”, which twists and turns through a variety of moods and atmospheres, hop scotching from melody to melody, yet still remaining a tightly wound bundle of…umm…antler masks? Another album peak is surely the potently propulsive “Fangs and Arrows”, which lays a countless number of layers overtop of a never ending drumbeat that could punch a hole in a cement wall if given enough time.

Behold Secret Kingdom is highly recommended for listeners who prefer atmosphere over melody in their music, and for people who enjoy diving into new and interesting sounds that bring together a number of past influences to create something truly unique.

  1. these guys are a joke-right? they have followed every trend popular for the last 10 years. they did emo as sender/receiver, they did screamo as HUGS, and now new noise as raccoooooon. everyone i know can see though this bands bullshit facade, why can’t you?

  2. I prefer to focus on bands’ strengths, rather than their weaknesses. If these pointless details about them are really bothering you, don’t listen to the band. I’ll be busy enjoying some great music.
